Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots was quite the game. Some people poo-pooed it because they hadn’t learned from the three previous Metal Gear Solid titles that there would be a lot of cutscenes, but for the rest of us it was a pretty great and engaging title. One thing that I personally never heard any one say, however, is, “Hey, do you want to play some Metal Gear Online?” Today, even if someone wanted to, they will not be able to sneak around Snake style on the internet. Multiplayer…multiplayer has changed…in that they turned it off today.
Konami put up an announcement of the closing of the MGO servers, and here is what they have to say:
MGO is an online game featuring many unique systems such as “Coordinated play via the SOP System”,”Combat Training Mode”, “Championship Tournaments”, etc., based on the system and world of “METAL GEAR SOLID 4: GUNS OF THE PATRIOTS”.
The service was originally intended to have a life span of 3 years. However, out of respect for our loyal fans, we have continually pushed back this deadline in order to support our online community.
Nevertheless, we have regretfully come to a point where players have experienced all that this iteration of Metal Gear Online is able to offer. Therefore, it saddens us to announce that we have decided to end online service with the upcoming fourth anniversary of online service. We would like to apologize to all of the users who are currently enjoying the Online Service for this title, and kindly ask for your understanding.
Even though I have never taken the time to play MGO, it is rather sad that I will never have the chance to in the future, although I do have it on good authority that logging in to MGO was a pain in the butt so maybe it is all for the best.
Do you have any fond memories of MGO? Leave them in the comments!
